The Water of the Nagara River transforms into a Classic Picture Scroll
The Nagara River is known as one of the clearest rivers in Japan. "Oze Ukai" is a traditional fishing method with a long history of over 1000 years, which takes place at about the middle reaches of the river. Usho fishermen, dressed in the traditional attire with headgear called the Kazaoreboshi and a grass skirt called the Koshimino, would catch fish with the expert use of leashes to control the cormorants under the torches.
Cormorants plunge into the water and come up with fish in their bills, encouraged by the calling, "Ho, ho", by the fishermen. On this "Karikudari", you can enjoy the grandeur sight of the Oze Ukai at close up. Every time cormorant catches a sweetfish, cheers and applauds from the spectators echo into the summer night sky. Enjoy the subtle and profound dances of the cormorants.
